McCormick Foundation Awards Grant Funds to Hearts & Lives
In January 2008, AEG, Garth Brooks, Los Angeles Times and Ticketmaster reached out to the McCormick Foundation to facilitate the raising and distribution of funds to benefit Southern California wildfire victims, as well as for the future of firefighting efforts in the state of California. In late January 2008, Garth Brooks played five record-setting, sold-out concerts in two days at the Los Angeles STAPLES Center, with net proceeds donated directly to the 2008 FIRE (Fire Intervention Relief Effort) Campaign.  With limited funding that recently became available, the McCormick Foundation awarded $220,904 from the FIRE Campaign to Hearts & Lives based upon their ability to successfully utilize grant funds to assist the residents of the San Bernardino Mountain communities. The funds will be used to continue educating community members on disaster preparedness with trainings and forums on various disaster subjects, to purchase a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) trailer, to purchase disaster preparedness supplies for each of the 7 school sites within the Rim of the World Unified School District, to purchase two way radios for each of the classrooms and front offices of the 7 school sites, and to assist 2007 fire victims needing assistance.  Hearts & Lives will oversee all trainings, planning, and purchases pertaining to this grant. Collaborative partnerships between Hearts & Lives, Rim of the World Unified School District, San Bernardino County Fire Dept and San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services play a key role in the success of the completion of this grant.  For more information regarding disaster preparedness or other community programs visit www.heartsandlives.org and www.mtncert.org.   You can also reach Hearts & Lives’ Blue Jay location at (909) 337-9922.
